All aboard the Skunk Train!

The boys are, of course, insane for trains, so kudos to Margot for discovering the Skunk Train that operates out of Fort Bragg (the town just up the coast from Mendocino). The train winds its way through redwoods en route to an old logging camp that offers BBQ & knickknacks (but not BBQ’d knickknacks). We met some nice families along the way. A 3-year-old kid named Silas ended up lending his name to Finn’s little souvenir stuffed skunk (for which we devised the mnemonic, “He makes you sigh less”), and a couple from Fremont helped the boys squash pennies on the rails while keeping Henry from being squashed as well! Despite the cold & wind, Hen insisted that he & I stand outside for mile after mile, so he’s a bit overrepresented in the photos. 🙂

Here’s a gallery from the day, as well as some video highlights:

Uvas Canyon Adventures

Following our torrential rains, the dudes & I explored the waterfalls of nearby Uvas Canyon. The boys even took turns rocking my big camera, so this set includes the first Finn-captured photo upload to Facebook! They were also keenly aware of things we could do to images after the fact (“Dad-O, take a picture & then Photoshop me falling off the bridge!” “Dad-O, will your Google friends make this into a little animation?”).

Stay tuned for the Photoshoppery, and in the meantime, here’s the gallery plus a short video below.

Half Moon Play

Following our trip to the aviation museum, I drove the dudes to Half Moon Bay’s famous pumpkin patches. It’s something we’d wanted to do for years, but traffic horror stories kept us from chancing it. This year, though, with Mom-O in Seattle for the weekend, I figured, hey, I’m going to be on the hook for keeping these guys safe & entertained, so why not do so while they’re physically restrained? 🙂

I had fun filling the boys with sugar, then letting them burn if off by dead-lifting giant pumpkins & wheeling them around. Back at the ranch we applied kitchen knives, crowbars, and shovels to the pumpkin-carving process—and somehow no one lost a digit!

Check out the gallery from our adventure, and see also the crazy high-speed “hyperlapse” video below.

Good Morning (USS) America!

Yesterday the boys were extremely excited to journey up to San Francisco at the invitation of my old Navy buddy, Commander Chris Peppel, to attend the commissioning of the brand-new USS America! They were so hyped the night before that they wanted to go straight to bed, with Henry announcing, “I’m going to get up, get dressed, and eat breakfast in the car!” We had a great time attending the ship & touring the new 45,000-ton ship (a small aircraft carrier—”small” being a strictly relative/only-in-America term!) and seeing Mr. Peppel. Here’s a gallery from the visit, plus a very short video below.

Alpine sliders!

Braving Chestnut Mountain’s Alpine Slide was a favorite part of my childhood, so we were delighted to get the Micronaxx in on the action during our trip. They enjoyed the action (and playful smack-talk between me & Margot!) so much that they begged to go back the next day. That time—unlike what you see in the vids below—I was smart enough to put my cameras away and focus on smoking the competition—finally redeeming myself in the eyes of our sons. 🙂

Henry is 5!

14653314642_605479cddf_zLast week our Henry turned 5 years old. Five! We can hardly believe our “little guy” is five already. We celebrated his actual birthday on the 9th, with family gifts and a sushi dinner at our favorite sushi restaurant, where Henry’s friends “the sushi ladies” presented him with the long-anticipated and much-talked-about green tea ice cream with umbrellas in it. He was thrilled!

His favorite part of the day, by far, was opening his new Lego Cargo Train set, his special gift from Mom-o and Dad-o. He’d been talking about it for a long time and was really hoping he’d get it for his birthday. He spent the next couple of days building the engine and cars with some assistance from his equally Lego-crazed brother and father. Now we’ve got the set up and running in the basement, and in Henry’s own words, he’s “obsessed with it”!

Yesterday we had his big birthday party in the backyard. He was really excited about its construction theme – we had caution tape streamers, a dump truck mylar balloon, real orange safety cones, hardhat party hats for the guests, safety signs, a bulldozer piñata, and a box-tower building relay race. Oh – and a bouncy house! There is no kid who enjoys a bouncy house more than Henry Nack. As soon as it was delivered and inflated he was in there hopping around and doing somersaults. All the kids played so hard they were dripping with sweat and red-cheeked by the end of the party. We decided to do a post-party cool-off at the Elks pool, with a little poolside takeout Bibo’s pizza to go with it.

Here’s a gallery from the big party!

¡Geek Fiesta!

This weekend marked the annual gathering of super-creative folks of all stripes, called Maker Faire. For those of you who’ve never gone, it’s definitely a must-experience! It’s billed as The Greatest Show and Tell on Earth, and it’s like a tw0-day science fair crossed with a county fair, with a bit of performance art thrown in. Or for those of you familiar with Burning Man, it’s like a smaller, less dusty, less expensive Burning Man. Exhibitors and participants come to celebrate creativity in all its forms, and share all of the fantastic things they’ve made. Some are there to help you figure out how to make your inventions a reality! There is always so much to see and do, and it is a total blast for both kids and adults. It really gets your creative juices flowing.

This year’s highlights included the always popular cupcake cars, a human-powered bike carousel, a high-five machine, a man-sized and man-powered sidewalk-chalk spirograph, serpent vehicles, a fire-breathing amphibious sea-serpent vehicle, lego robots, make-it-yourself kayak kits, cheap and portable DIY yurt kits, El Pulpo Mecanico (a giant fire-spouting metal octopus), a remote-control model boat battle (with real BB’s as ammo), and tons of crafts for the kids to make.  Here’s a little gallery from Sunday’s outing

Goodnight, Fellies

For his sixth birthday, Finn got a cool Crayola lightboard & marker kit, which I’ve started using to leave fun messages for the guys at bedtime.

Fellies

Coincidentally, John found out about a completely kooky kids’ book called Crabtree, about a deeply disorganized man who has misplaced his false teeth and proceeds to reorganize all of his belongings in an attempt to find them. Inspired by Crabtree’s collection, and illustration, of broken items, I created a night-time message for the boys that consisted of bedtime items broken into pieces, which they then had to mentally reassemble. Hilarity ensues:

Playdate Business Cards

BizCards

Our most excellent and super-creative friend Maria came up with a great idea for the Micronaxx: Playdate business cards! Since we often don’t bump into other kids’ parents at Pasitos or Finny’s daycare, it can be challenging to get playdates scheduled, since we don’t have contact information for the guys’ school buddies or their parents.

John usually gives one of his own business cards to the kid at school that our boys want to have a playdate with, and that works fairly well – in fact, this is how we’ve met and become friends with a few families in our neighborhood! Maria had the fantastic idea to create playdate business cards for each guy that he can hand to his friends at school. She asked the guys what they’d like to be called, and what sort of picture they’d like on their cards. With a little editing and help from Mom-o and Dad-o, here they are. We loved the initial idea and we love the finished product even more!

Stem Pals

Soon after I first met our friend Maria in Kansas City, she mentioned that as a kid she’d had something like 26 pen pals. Now she has two more (or maybe together one full-sized one) in the form of the Micronaxx. She’ll sometimes send them fun calligraphic work, and they like to return the favor by riffing on her supposed love of eating strawberry stems. Here you can see what they whipped up following a quick video chat with her:
