Easter Legos -> Trailer-park impresarios

Even though Finn recently declared that the Easter Bunny is a “ho-ho-hoax,” he’d sure still like to get that candy. 😌 So would Henry, of course, and they gently reminded me that in past years the bunny has delivered little Lego sets in their baskets. So, to celebrate the occasion—as well as the resurrection of the Westy—we treated them to a pair of camping-themed kits.

Afterwards in the basement they created a little trailer park & campground (complete with water features, Cub Scouts cooking eggs, a corny dad with a selfie stick 🙄, an under-construction rail line, and much more). Check out a few pics plus the loot’s arrival below:

Mick, Marin, and Mare Island

The dudes (including Seamus!) and I got the Westy back in action this past weekend, enjoying a most excellent trip to SF & points beyond. Poor Margot took a spill on her scooter last week, so it was just us guys heading up to meet my old friend Mick Swiney (just as great as ever nearly 20 years later) on the waterfront below the Bay Bridge.

After dropping Mick off we headed across the Golden Gate to Marin Co. to help our friends Monica & Peter celebrate their 50th birthdays & 20th anniversary. Afterwards the lads & I journeyed to the old Navy base on Mare Island for some quick camping & droning while Seamus “pollinated himself” (as Finn put it), happily rolling in the bounty from our trees.

Check out our gallery from the trip as well as an interactive 360º panorama from our campsite.

Moose of the Sea

We spent a wonderful (if salty, sandy, and tiring) Easter Sunday enjoying the beach & giving Mr. Seamus his first taste of the sea—making him at last the long-prophesied Sea Moose. 😌 Besides play-battling other dogs & digging well into the earth’s crust, Seamus enjoyed crashing out next to our little shade tent & standing dutiful, excitable watch against marauding seagulls. Check out a little gallery of photos, plus this vid of his seaside stylings:

Hot-rodded cars & pups

We had a busy weekend with Grandma & Grandpa Nack. While Grandma braved the long lines of La Villa to score us some raviolis, Henry got up close with a beautifully hot-rodded Model T:

The next day, it was a posse of puppies that got all spun up. Check out Seamus’s first puppy social:

Quick St. Paddy’s leftovers

Our friends Shay & Jake always put on a great St. Patrick’s Day party, and this year to compensate for the loss of me-as-human-jungle-gym, they debuted a fun photo booth with props. Click each image to see a larger version.

St. Paddy’s on the Farm

Realizing that we were long overdue for a visit to our friends Matthias & Samantha’s farm, the dudes & I headed over on Sunday for some high-speed mayhem on the quad, followed by a little farm work and some mayhem in the sprinkler. Check out the action below plus a handful of pics.

Operation Disgruntled Leprechaun

Oh man, we’ve all been there: You’re psyched up to bite into a delicious chocolate chip cookie, only to discover—raisins!! It’s not that they’re objectively bad, just that they’re not what was promised. Our expressive man Henry does not take such things lightly—to say the least. Behold… The Taste of BETRAYAL! 😝☘️ (Happily he recovered quickly. Happy St. Pat’s to you & yours!)

Super Moose!

We’ve been having so much fun with our little furball that we’ve barely gotten to touch the ol’ blog here. We’ve been trying to play him into good slumber, and here we are. 😌

For historical comparison, check out Super Hen from 9 years ago:

Finnster goes to Eleven

Our best blonde-haired, Fortnite-loving, Murdoch-watching, dog-walking, book-devouring fella Finn has somehow completed 11 (!) full trips around the sun with us. On Saturday we celebrated with the arrival of a giant Lego wind turbine plus some great gifts (a forensics kit & more!) from Grandma & Grandpa Nack, after which a whole gaggle of young dudes came over for Nerf wars, cake, and a movie. Check out a little gallery plus an epic battle to blow out candles. 😝

Meet the famous Mr. Seamus!

He’s here, he’s here!

After many months of deliberation and research, we finally have our own pup—the happy & wiggly Mr. Seamus Liem Murdog Nack! He flew in on Thursday afternoon, and we’ve been having a ball having him explore the yard, make himself at home in Finn’s room, and generally make our lives at least 200% more fluffy. 😌 He’s kept us busy enough that I’ve hardly gotten to take my customary raft of photos, but you know those are coming! Meanwhile, check out his arrival:

High, Son

On many recent weekends, the boys have gone looking for their friend Henry D., only to scurry home after about 60 seconds with the bad news, “He’s rock climbing.” This has happened so often that “rock climbing” has become shorthand for getting cheated out of hanging out with a friend.

So, this past weekend, when Henry D. invited the boys to come with him, they jumped at (read: were brutally cajoled into taking 😌) the opportunity—and they did great! Here are a couple of quick pics courtesy of Henry’s dad David:

Cavortin’ in Davenport

Yesterday we seized on our first sunny day in a while to tool up Highway 1 with Grandpa Liggett, visiting Finn’s favorite restaurant (the Davenport Roadhouse), then heading south to check out beachfront Capitola. Hen went bonkers upon seeing the giant train trestle, so he & I spent some quality time exploring up there with my drone while the other guys chilled down below. Here’s the latest installment of Henry Nack Model Train Central…

…plus some footage I captured of him…

…and a 360º panorama I shot from above:

A major award

I have no idea what occasioned it, but we were delighted to come home & find that Hen had made Mom-O a lovely hand-lettered certificate affirming her status as Best Mom Ever. 🥰

The Mad Scientists of Willow Glen

On Tuesday night we were delighted to check out the fruits of the dudes’ recent forays into science (see gallery).

In the video below, car-lovin’ Henry discusses his explorations of Matchbox physics and the impact of a car’s age, weight, and axle cleanliness on its downhill speed.

And here Finnster talks us through his & Ethan’s experiments to see which substances best keep a paper lion’s feet dry & thus keep him afloat the longest.

Hey Porter!

Henry I spent a frosty few hours chilling in Barstow, CA, during our long journey home. Though the Western America Railroad Museum & historic Harvey House were closed due to the New Year’s holiday, we had a free hand to scramble all around the engines and check out the old equipment. Check out our gallery plus this hands-on tour from Hen:

And here’s a little drone footage from Dad-O, set to Johnny Cash:

Lastly, here’s an interactive 360º shot from overhead:

Next-level Nerfing

Finn & our neighbor Henry D. continue to evolve their video production skills, as demonstrated in their latest masked misadventure. For any possibly bewildered grandparents out there, at least it’s an inadvertent tour of the new deck. 😌

Bunking aboard the Hornet

The guys and I are just back from an overnight visit to the USS Hornet, a highly decorated World War II-era carrier we last visited some 7 years ago (photos). This time around we spent the night with our Cub Scout pack & several hundred other scouts & parents from around the area. On the whole we had a ball touring the ship, grabbing chow on board (“The cookie was exceptional!” reports Hen), and bunking among pals. Check out our gallery.

I also had a little fun flying my drone over the Hornet & her adjacent Navy ships:

Who’s down for ghost town?

New year, old school: we kicked off 2019 by dropping by the Calico Ghost Town just outside Barstow, CA, during our long journey home. Hen was naturally drawn to the narrow-gauge railroad, while Margot & Finn checked out old shops (sorry, “shoppes”) and sundries. Here’s a gallery and a quick tour of our visit:

Behold, the Grand Canyon!

You know how it’s said that “Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night” can stop postal workers? We felt a bit similar on this trip: not a busted van nor blowing snow nor hours of monotonous desert highways could keep us from the Grand Canyon—and on Sunday we finally made it!

As you can see in our gallery, we took in the awesome, billion-year-old sights over the course of nearly seven miles of walking. We were blessed with a gloriously clear & fairly warm day, and fortunately neither daredevil Hen nor Irish-despondent Dad took a plunge into the canyon. Hen was also more than thrilled to spend a bunch of time up close & personal with the cars of the famous Grand Canyon Railway. Afterwards we pit stopped at an air museum & then finished the day on the neon-lit streets of historic Route 66 in Williams, AZ.

And here you can see some of what we experienced while walking around the canyon & later the train:

Hola, 2019!

Happy New Year, everyone! Our fam is presently chilling (in every sense) in Flagstaff, AZ, thanks to a winter snowstorm rolling in. Although some of what we’d like to see (including the Lowell Observatory, where Pluto was discovered) is closed due to snow & the holiday, we were able to mosey around downtown, chat with some friendly ND alums, and then catch the New Year’s Eve “Pinecone Drop”! I’m posting a quick gallery before we begin our long trip back west, down from the mountains & into warmer climes.
