Convoy!

A couple weeks ago, John stumbled upon a really great find for the boys–a set of black and yellow construction vehicle-shaped utensils: spoon, fork, and bulldozer/pusher. They’re from a company called “Constructive Eating” (hah hah), and were so cute in the pictures, we knew we had to order some for our truck-crazy tykes.

I surprised The Dudes with them at breakfast this morning, and they both went completely bananas over them. Finny has not had them out of his possession except to allow us to wash them off after eating. In fact, they accompanied him into the bath, to take in the garbage cans, and now he is sleeping with them clutched to his chest.  Here are some shots of the guys enjoying their new tools:

Best. Kid Park. Ever.

The Naxx micro and macro took a little field trip on Sunday to a fantastic park we’ve heard about from several sets of friends: Dennis The Menace Park in Monterey. Twins Bettie & Quade had a great time visiting with their folks recently, and Finn’s buddy Hoot grew up going to that park.

Suffice it to say, we all had a great time. I don’t think I’ve ever been to a park this terrific! There’s a huge, real steam locomotive (decommissioned, much to Engineer Finny’s dismay) for kids to climb all over, a hedge maze, an incredibly long “rolly slide”, a wobbly suspension bridge, and all sorts of other things. We will certainly have to come back since we only got a small taste of its offerings. Check out the video, above, and note Finn immediately exclaiming, “I want to do it again!!” following each trip down the slide. Little Hen’, on the other hand, was comparatively stoic. He was more amped about the little-guy jungle gym with its own G-man-sized attractions. He inadvertantly took his first independent steps when he was storming over to the slide faster than I could keep up! (As soon as he realized he wasn’t holding on, though, the jig was up!) And now, for the requisite gallery (HTML). Enjoy!

Motormen!

This summer has been a vehicle bonanza for the Micronaxx. Our garage is starting to look like a very small car lot. Henry got a little Tonka ride-on tractor for his birthday, and our nannies Coco and Tiffy bestowed a large Radio Flyer all-terrain wagon and a Harley Davidson Big Wheel on the boys as gifts. The boys absolutely love riding in the big wagon on their way to the barbershop, park, or to visit the newest neighborhood attaction, “the little crocodile in the spiky bush!” (Don’t worry, the crocodile is yard-art  made of cement.)

Finny has gotten super-excited about the Harley, and has really gotten the hang of pedaling himself around. (Steering is another story.) The Harley has lots of fun features, like ticking turn signals, a horn, and engine sounds. It also a “radio” that plays music–this might be his favorite feature, since he ceases pedaling and pauses to rock out, waggling arms akimbo and bouncing around in the seat. It’s the cutest thing ever, as I hope you’ll agree when you watch the video that accompanies the gallery of photos (HTML) of the dudes and their wheels.

“What up, Dawg?” asks Billy Goat

Finny has recently become obsessed with Raggs, a big blue dog with his own song and dance show on PBS. He insists on being called a dog, not a boy, and he won’t answer to Finny–only Raggs*! Thank goodness we already have a pair of blue doggy-themed PJ’s, which have become the ensemble of choice for our young canine amigo.

In other animal news, Raggs has decided that his little brother is a billy goat. We’re not exactly sure why he decided to classify his brother as a goat, but it was prescient, given Henry’s proclivity to try and climb anything and everything he can get tiny feet (hooves?) on.

If anyone had told me a few years back that I’d now be coming home to a big blue dog and a billy goat, I never would have believed them. But, you know, they make cute pets!

[* She’s not kidding! The other day at Aqui, I was trying to order us dinner with Finn on my arm. It went something like this:

— Me (to lady): Hi–do you guys have any kid-sized lemonades?
— Finn (er, Raggs): I’m a dog!
— Me: Okay, do you guys have dog-sized lemonades?
— Lady: Sure.
— Me: Great–and we’d like a kids’ taco bowl with–
— Raggs: I’m a dog!!

And so on. 🙂 –Dad-O]

Pinecone Jam! And Other Goings-on.

We’ve been having some really fun times with “the Dudes” lately. So much to report, and not sure where to start, so I’ll just start here:

Dad-o was out of town on Friday and Saturday for a business trip, so I got to spend lots of solo time with the guys. I decided it would be fun to fill up the wading pool on Saturday morning since the weather promised to be sweltering. I figured we’d fill it up but wait to dive in until lunchtime when the sun had warmed up the water. Well, the Dudes did not want to wait, so it was clothes off, dipes off, and into the pool! Finn was busy dropping all kinds of toys and other items into the pool, including a pinecone he picked up out of the mud by the gazebo. As the pinecone went in and the mud bits sank down towards the bottom, Finny mumbled something that I didn’t quite hear. I asked him what he said, and he said “Pinecone Jam.” It took me a second, but then I said, “Oh, like toe jam?” And he nodded and smiled.

In Henry news, our little guy had his 1-year checkup, and clocked in at 24 1/2 pounds, 29 inches long, and 48cm. head circumference. He’s only in the 25th percentile for height, but 75th for weight, so we’re expecting a growth spurt soon that should stretch out that spare tire! He’s got a total of 13 teeth, 4 of which have arrived in the past week or so, and he is crawling like he’s trying to set land speed records. Tonight I walked to the kitchen to get him a pre-bedtime bottle of milk, and I heard him crawling toward me saying “mama mama mama” over and over. My heart melted. He continues to be fascinated with his brother’s toes, utensils, and sippy cups, to which Finn usually responds “no Goonie, don’t touch my (insert posession/body part here).”

4th of July With the “Flying G”

We had a great time celebrating the 4th of July with our squirrels. It was a gorgeous, sunny day (“nottoohot!” as Finny would say), and we spent most of it outside. First off, Dad-o and Finny hit the hardware store for some mulch and tomfoolery with plumbing fixtures. At one point, Finny dubbed Henry “Flying G” after seeing us lift Henry up off the ground by his arms to get him up stairs & over curbs while he practices his walking. We think that’s a pretty terrific nickname to add to the list! Then it was off to a neighborhood barbecue at lunch time, complete with water balloons, games, hot dogs, and popsicles. When we returned home, our long-dormant fountain was burbling away, thanks to our supercool neighbor Richard.

After naptime, we played in the yard then headed out for a BBQ with some friends and their kiddos, both of whom are Finny’s age. Henry really dug the Radio Flyer and eating ice from the cooler, and Finn was having a ball in the cardboard box fort and riding around on kamikaze-style on a scooter in the driveway, crashing it into the bamboo like the Japanese chimp in one of his favorite YouTube videos. Here’s our little gallery (HTML).

As for Mom-o and Dad-o, we enjoyed the company of some other adults (woohoo!) and the fruits of our friend Derek’s labor over the Weber grill. Our dudes were pretty exhausted by the time we got them home and rolled into bed. We didn’t hang around long enough to catch any official fireworks, but the M-80’s being detonated a few houses down the street kept us (but not the dudes!) awake for a while.

[PS–I’m guessing Margot was more comfortable this year, not being insanely pregnant this time around. 🙂 –J.]

A New Fuzzy Buddy Joins the Fold

The Nack family has welcomed a new Buddy in Blanketude! Our little Henry has finally bonded with his own little soft blankie buddy. As you know, Finn latched onto Leo, his little buddy, at about 7 or 8 months old. Henry never needed a pacifier or any kind of soothing tools to get to sleep–he found his thumb very early on and just pacified himself. Lately, though, Henry’s been protesting quite a bit when we lay him down in the crib–like he doesn’t want to be left alone (although he makes it clear he does not want to be held!).

Luckily for us, back when Henry was brand new, I preemptively picked up a trio of little owl blankies made by the same folks that created our beloved Leo(s). I decided to try offering one, dubbed “Ollie” by Dad-o, to Henry last week when he was starting to get upset about being put in the crib. Boy oh boy did that do the trick! As soon as he grabbed onto Ollie and rubbed Ollie’s little face into his own, he calmed right down and went down without another peep. It’s so incredibly sweet to see how happy Henry gets when he clutches his little friend and cuddles up in the crib.

Countdown to Muffin! (No Bluffin’)

There’s no telling what hilarity is going to ensue when Finny starts chatting with us over dinner. Tonight he was enjoying a bowl of oatmeal with chopped dried apricots (quickly dubbed “oopricoots” by our little guy) when he spied me grabbing a miniature brownie from a package on the counter. Ever vigilant, he asked me what I was eating. Instead of trying to wade through the details of describing a miniature brownie, I simply called it a “muffin.”

Seeing that the “muffin” in question was chocolate, Finny declared “All done with dinner! Finny would like a muffin!” I told him he needed to finish his oatmeal and oopricoots, and then we’d talk about having some muffin. He wasn’t really going for it, so I suggested that we count 10 more bites of oatmeal, and if he ate all ten, then he could have the muffin. For laughs, I told him we’d count backwards, from 10 down to one.

Following is a dramatic retelling of the countdown.

M: “Ok, big lion-bite! that’s 10”

F: “Now muffin!”

M: “Well, not yet, we have 9 more bites to go. Nine! Way to go!”

F: “Uh-huh, muffin.”

M: “We’re still doing oatmeal. Eight! Seven!”

F: “Now muffin!”

M: “Not yet, six more bites. Six!”

F: “All done with oatmeal! Muffin!”

M: “Okay, what number comes before six?”

F: “Muffin!”

M: “Five…then what’s next? Not three but…”

F: “Muffin!”

M: “Well I was shooting for ‘4’, but now we’re at three. Three more..”

F: “Finny want that muffin!”

He made his way valiantly to the last bite, at which point he was richly rewarded with the muffin. It disappeared into his boca with nary a crumb remaining!

¡Hombres Pequeños y Grandes!

This past weekend our Argentinian friends Adolfo, Romina, and their son Bruno rolled into SJ for a visit. When we last saw them in Vegas last spring, Brunito was only about 7 months old. Now he’s a big, mobile, curly-topped 18-month old, and I think he had a pretty good time “kickandalo” with our guys.

Adolfo took some great pics (HTML) of all the guys (Dad-O included!) goofing around in the backyard and at “Traintrackpark.” At one point, Finny was clearly enjoying his chocolate milk, and then later Bruno was really digging the bottle, which was dubbed “Coca!”

[Of the “Audi Assault” photo, Adolfo writes on Facebook, “Bruno wearing an anti-anti-riot helmet as he fights capitalism with a curl making device | Bruno con un casco anti-antidisturbios, mientras combate al capitalismo con un artefacto hacedor de rulos.” Or as Finn puts it, “Bruno tried to bonk the Ocho!” 🙂 –J.]

22-10-28…Hut Hut Hut!

Our little Quique (a nickname for Enrique) had his 9-month checkup today. He was an absolute dream at Dr. S’s office while we waited for the poking, prodding, and shots. He currently clocks in at 22 lbs. 10 oz., and 28 inches tall. That makes him a little smaller than his big bro at the same age. He’s got eight chompers with more starting to make their way to the top–the doc said she could see that his back molar area was a bit swollen already.

Dr. S. asked if he responds to his name, but I said that I didn’t think so, based on the fact that we have about a million nicknames for him–he’s probably not too sure what his real name is! But he’s on track with all the other milestones for his age–proto-crawling, clapping, pincer grasp, babbling and playing peek-a-boo, and starting to wave.

We wrapped up our day with a session on the front porch settee, watching the world go by in the early evening. Henry was placid as could be, quietly observing everything that crossed his path. We’ll go back to Dr. S. for his 12-month checkup sooner than we know it!

Pacific Time

We just wrapped up a lovely evening with the boys. Apparently it was Nack-Boy Meltdown Theater™ earlier this afternoon, so our nanny prescribed a late afternoon nap for both Henry and Finny. They slept from 4:15 until I got home around 5:15, and when they got up, both were absolutely in top form. Finny was happy and keeping himself busy, and Henry was the most pacific he’s been in ages. Super cuddly and babbly and 100% nice-to-be-around.

We decided to go out to the pizza place for dinner since bedtime would be getting pushed back, and we all had a great time. Finn was excited to watch the pizza man squash the dough in the press, and also thrilled to wash down his pizza with a little chocolate gelato afterwards. Henry remained cool and calm the whole time, quietly eating his dinner and observing the goings on. It was such a nice way to spend the evening. Now Henry’s in bed with nary a peep of protest, and Finn’s on his way, having just finished his bath.

Bedlam!

The big day has finally come…time to set up Finn’s “big boy bed”! Grandpa Liggett has given Finny the bed from his childhood, although the bed itself is probably older than the Civil War (purchased at a farm sale waaaaay back when by my grandpa). It’s a beautiful big wooden bed. All we had to do was get a new mattress for it, since nobody really wants to sleep on one that dates to the 19th century.

In addition to the new, super-comfy foam mattress, we got giraffe sheets, a monkey pillow, and bed rails so our guy doesn’t tumble out in his sleep. I got the whole shebang set up this afternoon before Finny’s nap, so he could check it out and start taking some practice runs. The accompanying video is a pretty good summation of his excitement about the new bed, although for now he has chosen to continue sleeping in the crib (which is still set up in his room).

[On that note, I was pretty sure that “Bedlam” was going to turn into “Bed-lam,” with the Finnster going on the lam! Mom-O made it clear, though: Leaving the bed meant heading to the crib–an offer he accepted. –Dad-O]

Henry OchoNuevo

Today Henry turns 9 months old. Wowee, how time flies! Little Mr. H. has been working on lots of milestones lately. Two new teeth emerged last week after a long, painful, whiny stint of teething, bringing his tooth-count to 8 (ocho!)! He’s also been rolling from back to front (finally!) and back again. I honestly thought he’d never master the back-to-front roll, since he seemed so content to stay on his back once he’d rolled off his tum.

He’s started migrating around the crib during the night, has graduated from baby food to table food, and is learning how to transition from sitting to lying on his tummy. He’s not too happy once he’s stuck lying on the ground, but he does enjoy the process of leeeeeeaning forward until he can stretch himself completely out. Henry seems to really dig standing up in his excersaucer, which we’ve dubbed his “disco” thanks to its music-themed doodads and the music that it emits.

All in all, he’s a happy little guy with an adorable, puckish grin, which usually emerges as he’s watching his big bro’s antics in the tub or at the dinner table. The two brothers really seem to get a kick out of one another these days.

Pet Sounds from Way Out

On Sunday we & the lads enjoyed a visit to the recently re-opened Happy Hollow petting zoo. It was a lovely warm, sunny day, and we all had a great time roaming around the park. We saw goats, mules, sheep, lemurs, and parrots, and we didn’t even make it through the whole zoo! We decided to buy a family membership since it was obvious we’d want to come back many times.

Here is a little gallery (HTML) of our adventures. Finno and Dad-o decided to feed the goats–happily no trolls were spotted. Even Leo got in on the action! (We were a little worried that one of the goats might make off with Leo and have him for a snack!) We found a big water pump just like the one in Finn’s favorite book Hogwash. After a break for sandwiches and fruit, Finn and Dad-o made their way to the carousel where Finny got to ride on the big giraffe. On our way out, Finn made the acquaintance of several large brass animals that were gleaming in the sun.

[These days Finn is just as taken with inquiring about drainage pipes, wires, etc. as with checking out animals. Seeing (and announcing) “Lemur pooping!” was a highlight, however, as was his spontaneous attempt to drink from the goat watering hole! –J.]

Grandma Nack’s visit

Grandma Nack was in town to help us celebrate Finny’s birthday a few weeks ago, and although we’re admittedly late in getting the photos posted, here they are! Just as cute as the day they were captured.

There were lots of adventures, and here is a little gallery (HTML) of them. Among them, you’ll see Finny unwrapping Grandma’s presents, enjoying some leftover birthday cake (chocolate, obviously) with Henry riding shotgun, and Henry munching on one of Finny’s gifts–BugBonz from our pal MrsW.

Oh, and there were plenty of Grandma’s smooches, Finn enjoying his new bike (a zike bike, perhaps?), and a goofy exchange of glances between Mom-o and the boys in the kitchen.

Happy News for Henry!

Hip Hip Hooray, Henry Nack is A-OK!!!

We’re just back from the pediatric urologist, and have fantastic news. Henry’s kidneys and ureters are absolutely perfectly fine. He has no blockage, everything is draining as it should, and the issues we were seeing before have resolved themselves almost completely. Hooray!!!

No more antibiotics, no more tests, no surgery, and no more worries about our guy’s kidneys. We’ll do one more ultrasound in June to check on the slight remaining swelling in the left ureter, but the Dr. assures us Henry will outgrow the issue completely, and that we have no reason to worry about anything.

Speaking for both John and me: “Whew!”

The Big Deuce

Finny had his big-guy 2-year checkup today with Dr. S. Our hale and healthy boy checked in solidly on the 97th percentile for height, weight, and head circumference. He is 37 inches tall, which strongly suggests that he will be over six feet tall when he’s fully grown. He is a whopping 33 pounds 4 oz., and his head is 51 cm. around.

Dr. S. was impressed with not only his size but his verbal acumen and his skills at pretend play. She asked if he spoke in sentences of 4-5 words, and I said “yeah, well, a lot more than that, actually. It’s really like talking to a normal person,” and gave her an example of one of his typical sentences these days: “Mom-o get Finny some lunch and put Goonie in the  hopper.” I believe “Wow!” was her response. She also liked hearing that Finn’s already got quite the imagination–calling me “the caboose” and his brother “little freight car” or “screech owl.”

Our boy had to get three shots today, but he was really a champ about the whole thing–only crying a little bit after the first two. Once I picked him up and gave him a squeeze, he was fine and later remarked “Finny got some shots and cried a little bit.” Now he won’t have to worry about shots until he’s 4!

All Aboard for Finny’s Birthday Party!

This afternoon we celebrated Finny’s 2nd birthday (even though he’s not officially 2 until Tuesday). What a fun day we had! After weeks of nonstop rain, the clouds broke and we had a gorgeous, warm, sunny day.

I made a fun Thomas the Tank Engine train cake, thanks to some helpful pictures and advice from Finn’s Auntie Laura. The cake turned out far better than I had imagined–we had Thomas, his coal tender, and three freight cars. Finny was raptly watching me frost them, and although I was trying to explain that they were train cars, he didn’t really get it until the blue frosting went onto the Thomas cake. Then, when I put Thomas’s face on the front, it dawned on him that the cake really was a train. He started saying “Thomas! That’s Thomas!” and spent quite a while looking at the cake from all angles. It was my favorite moment of the entire day.

Lots of Finny’s playgroup pals and their parents came to the shindig, as did many other of our friends–Hoot, Alex, and Milos, the Hogartys, Reen, and our neighbors. And special guest Grandma Nack, who flew out from Illinois just for the party. It was wonderful to have a big Sunday afternoon playdate with the added bonus of cake, presents, and beautiful sunshine. We were thrilled that everyone could go out and enjoy the yard, especially since our living room is not very big when it’s filled with so many toddlers and parents!

Finn blew out his candles like a pro, and had a really good time at his party. I think everyone else did, too, and we were reminded of how many wonderful, kind people we have in our lives.

Ham in the Tub

Here are some shots (HTML) from Finny and Henry’s first bath together in the tub! Both boys were really enjoying themselves, much to our delight. I honestly thought it would be like tossing two cats into a pool–lots of fighting and tears!

Clad only in a bubble bath goatee, we think Henry resembles a tiny, infantile Colonel Sanders. He sampled the seafood (purple Octopus cup), and tried on a bubble mohawk, which Finny proceeded to “shave” with a small tube of toothpaste. Dad-O proclaims the brotherly antics “Dynamite!”

…More Tests Required

Today was Henry’s appointment with the pediatric urologist at Stanford Medical Center’s Children’s Hospital. We had to take all the records and reports from his prior ultrasounds and X-ray so the specialist could check everything out. The doctor and his resident were both incredibly nice and gentle, and were very attentive to both Henry and I. They answered all my questions and gave as thorough an explanation as they could concerning Henry’s condition.

In a nutshell, Henry needs a couple more tests before the doctor will be comfortable giving a definitive diagnosis of his kidney condition. Right now it’s just known as “megaureter,” which is a general term for inexplicably enlarged kidneys and ureters. Henry will have another X-ray test, called a Mag 3, which is designed to show whether his ureters are blocked (thereby indicating a physical impediment to the flow between kidney and bladder) or unblocked (which could indicate a malfunction with the musculature of the ureters). The doc said that if they’re not blocked, the situation eventually will resolve itself without the need for surgery. If they’re blocked, at some point surgery will be needed to remove the blockages, but we’d wait until he’s older to do that. In the meantime, we keep him on the antibiotic, do the tests this coming month, and then see the doc again in March to see what the tests show.

For his part, Henry was an absolute doll the entire morning. The appointment was smack in the middle of his normal naptime, but he slept in the car both ways, and was happy and calm for the duration of the consultation. Oh, and he was in love with the adorable baby he kept glimpsing in the mirror at the end of the exam table :D. And big kudos to the Children’s medical center–the facilities are so nice, welcoming, well-lit, and kid friendly, it is very easy for everyone to be at ease while they’re visiting.
